If you're looking for a summer camp where your child can have fun, grow emotionally, but most importantly level-up academically to prevent summer learning loss (also known as summer slide or summer brain drain), Think, Speak & Grow Academy™ is the place for you. We pride ourselves on creating a warm, caring, and personalized environment for every child by meeting them at their level of need and providing them with experiences to think critically, speak confidently, and grow exponentially!

Our summer camp focuses on three key components: Academics, Enrichments & Exploration.

We assert that the most important pillar is Academics. In our current globally competitive society, your child will compete for career/entrepreneurship opportunities with children across the global who engage in academically rigorous learning year-round. Your child's readiness academically will impact their access to opportunities and overall quality of life. As such, our focus is not only helping each child prevent summer learning loss/summer slide, but ensuring our campers LEVEL-UP academically. Our goal is to help campers level-up by challenging them with work for the grade they will be entering, thus creating a trajectory of academic success where they are a step ahead of their peers.

Summer Learning Loss (also known as Summer Slide or Summer Brain Drain)

Parents and teachers alike have been wondering, “What is summer learning loss? How does it affect my students?” The short answer is most students lose about two months of grade level equivalency in reading and mathematical computation skills over the summer months – what educators and researchers refer to as “summer learning loss” or “summer brain drain.”

To succeed in school and life, children need ongoing opportunities to learn and practice essential skills. This is especially true during the summer months.

  • Parents consistently cite summer as the most difficult time to ensure that their children have productive things to do (Duffett et al. 2004)

  • Low-income students lose more than two months in reading achievement, more than other income groups

  • (Cooper, 1996)

  • Summer learning loss is NOT correlated to race, IQ or gender (Cooper, 1996)

  • About two-thirds of the ninth-grade achievement gap between lower and higher income youth can be explained by unequal access to summer learning opportunities during the elementary school years (Alexander et al. 2007)

Summer Learning Loss Impacts Every Student and Teacher Every Year

All students experience learning loss when they do not engage in educational activities during the summer. Research spanning 100 years shows that students typically score lower on standardized tests at the end of summer vacation than they do on the same tests at the beginning of the summer (White, 1906; Entwisle & Alexander 1992; Cooper, 1996; Downey et al. 2004). The research on summer learning loss is so persuasive the John Hopkins University founded the National Association for Summer Learning a decade ago to help educate parents and teachers on how to prevent summer learning loss.

To address Summer Learning Loss, we utilize the ThinkStretch Summer Learning Program, which is a research-based system aligned with state and national curriculum standards.  ThinkStretch is a complete system - materials, awards, communications, and beyond. Moreover, most importantly, we strive to make learning fun, creative and reignite students passion for learning by appealing to all learning styles.

Spaces are limited, so register now to help your child LEVEL-UP instead of experiencing summer loss learning!

Because Summer Learning Loss is cumulative, by the 5th grade students can lose nearly 18 months of learning.

Only 48% of parents (with children ages 6-17) have heard of summer learning loss, while just 38% of lower-income parents have heard of it. Only 9.2% of students attend a summer learning programming to combat summer loss.

Research has shown that students who read four or more books over a summer perform better on reading-comprehension tests in the fall than their peers who don't--regardless of income level.

Summer Learning Loss is very real and has important repercussions in the lives of students, especially those with fewer financial resources.
