It is vital to understand that students in grades K-2 are learning to read; while students in grades 3-12 are reading to learn - understanding what they have read and gaining new knowledge. Driven by this philosophy, our focus for Reading tutoring is as follows.
Grades K-2: explicit phonics, phonemic awareness, fluency, vocabulary, oral language development, listening and speaking
Grades 3-8: vocabulary, fluency, comprehension
Our grade-level focus areas encompass the five components of reading students may struggle with:
1-to-1 Tutoring Model
Targeted Skill Practice
Based on the student's areas of growth in one of the five components of reading, instructors will determine the skill(s) to target.
Guided Practice & Close Reads
Guided practice and close reads are essential to learning and critical for students who struggle with reading. During guided practice,
students will practice reading deliberately with purpose, under the supervision of the instructor. Scholars will learn strategies to attack and
comprehend a text. Close reading is thoughtful, critical analysis of a text that focuses on significant details or patterns in order to develop a
deep, precise understanding of the text’s form, craft, and meaning.
